Hobbes, age 15, did his best John Wayne when he squired two-year-old Persephone the Mustang around our lanes this weekend. The pair bantered back and forth as Hobbes, the sorrel AQHA gelding on the right, demonstrated his expertise at refreshing young horses in the nuances of being ponied (Read: He intimidates with his bulk and bites them in the nose if they get too forward.)
Hobbes (aka: Sixes Daredevil, who came to us from the 2010 CSU Legends of Ranching sale): It’s OK. You’re just young and stupid.
Persephone: You’re just old and ugly.
Hobbes: Liar. Everybody always tells me how handsome I am. Did anyone ever tell you that you’re beautiful when you’re angry?
Persephone’s owner, Mary Ward on Calypso, adopted Mustang mother to “Little P”, kept the teenager moving from behind as we explored the property.
